On exhibition until April 3rd is Making Fun: the 67th Scripps Ceramic Annual- the longest continuous exhibition of contemporary ceramics in the United States. I love being part of this show and it’s a huge honor besides! Tim Berg, who teaches at Pitzer College and makes hilarious work himself, put together a fabulous group of young artists who use humor and play in their work. Among my favorites are Pattie Chalmers, with her Canadian icons like the Mountie and mailbox-chewing beaver, Tom Müller, with his elephant, moldy tomato and saggy balloons, and Matt Wedel, with his out-of-proportion yet, gorgeous plants.
You can see more pictures of the show and the pots that Sara Varon and I collaborated on here and read a well done article here. We have earthenware pots with silver luster depicting various vampires, frightened dinosaurs, rabbits who love hygiene, rowdy boxers, and a nurse who holds her syringe like a meat fork. In my studio, I feel as though I play and make little jokes all the time, but when I work with Sara, it becomes something different and even more fun because when a joke is shared it becomes even better.
